United States spends billions on “modernizing” nuclear weapons

The United States plans to spend billions to upgrade a decades old atomic bomb designed to stop a Soviet invasion of Europe, as part of a controversial project to modernize its nuclear arsenal.

Some  lawmakers and experts dismiss the effort as a colossal waste of money that could derail arms control talks with Russia.

Washington removed thousands of tactical atomic weapons from Europe after the Cold War ended. But B61 bombs remain in Europe, the only American nuclear weapon still deployed on the continent, at NATO bases in Germany, Belgium, Italy etc.

The President of Untied States has also planned upgraded the various models of the bomb would be replaced by a modified version which would have a smaller and more accuracy.

The improvements are needed as the weapons/instruments are aging and will gradually deteriorate according the Pentagon.

According to a statement, these types of bombs and weapons contains antiquated technology and requires frequent handling for maintenance.

This type of modernization also will allow the Barak Obama to retire the most powerful atomic bombs which reduce the overall amount of nuclear material in the arsenal.
This approach will allow the time reductions in the total number of nuclear weapons. The US president Mr. Obama has also called for more progress in scalling back US and Russian nuclear stockpiles and in a speech in Berlin in June, in which he promised to work with NATO to seek bold reductions in tactical nuclear weapons in Europe.

For skeptics the projects looks overly ambitious at this time of budget austerity, when the Air Force is already planning for major spending on the fighter jets that has a new long arrange bomber and new cruise missile.

Barak Obama has also touted fresh weapons and arms  control negotiations with Russia as a priority but making improvements for bomb could undermine prospects for any deal with Collina, Mosco etc.

It is certainly indicated that the United States puts upgrade B61 bombs which are more accurate in Europe, Russian and will probably has response positively.
